Current News:

The report covered the possible introduction of HERA into Estates and a meeting our members is to be held to help outline the benefits. Membership is currently around 34% but possibly higher in real terms.

The disagreement with UCU about ownership of posts depending upon grade does not of help, but we have challenged this but in reality the effect is possibly marginal.

On Brexit the loss to landlords/business etc will all playapart. A recent report carried out by the Fraser of Allander Institute identified that Dundee University supports £740M in turnover to the economy. Night clubs, bars, coffee shops, taxis and buses all benefit from the student spending power. In fact, for every £1 of Scottish Government spending the University generates 37 for the economy.

We accept that emigration may be a concern and therefore there must be realistic checks in place, but they need to be appropriate and efficient to ensure we do not deter those who may want to study here.

On Health & Safety, we saw 621,000 injuries at work, around 13,000 deaths each year from occupational lung disease and 1.3 million people suffering from work related illness. Staggeringly these figures, although shocking, are an improvement and reflect a downward trend.

It is no secret that much of the legislation protecting workers comes from or is influenced by Europe.

There is therefore a question mark about the removal or reversal of much of this legislation.

This has already begun under the previous government in the guise of cutting red tape and streamlining processes.

In fact, the current estimated direct cost from injuries and ill health is a staggering £14.1 billion so there are benefits all round to

ensuring a robust protection and improvement to our Health and Safety Legislation

This of course affects all of us equally across the UK, but in Scotland we may have an opportunity to influence the future through early contact with the Scottish Parliament. In Scotland we may have an opportunity to influence the future through early contact with the Scottish Parliament.
